Statement of Values & Diversity
We are living in tumultuous times. In an age when we often feel polarized, divided, and isolated, Ryan believes that music in particular, in its often ambiguous and nonrepresentational nature, offers a unique opportunity for us to look past our differences and see the humanity in each other. It also invites us to practice listening to beauty and listening to each other, which in turn, promotes empathy.
As an artist and a teacher, Ryan aims to foster an environment of respect and inclusion for everyone. He cherishes opportunities to collaborate with and learn from those of different cultural, social, economic, and artistic backgrounds from his own, and values different perspectives. In fact, being surrounded by diversity has been a critical part of his upbringing and education.
Ryan unequivocally believes Black lives matter and supports the rights of people in the LGBTQ+ community. He stands with communities facing forms of genocide and erasure, particularly Indigenous communities here in the United States, as well as in Palestine, Lebanon, Tibet, and elsewhere. He stands against all forms of oppression and discrimination, including racism, xenophobia, misogyny, ageism, ablism, homophobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. He also acknowledges the history of racism and sexism in Western classical music and understands his responsibility to work at making this community a more welcoming space for everyone.
