fireflies (2023)

for two violins | ca. 7’

commissioned by Sharan Leventhal

Program Note

This piece is not necessarily “about” fireflies, but it can be if you want. The aspects evoked by the title are the gentle qualities of nighttime, stillness, luminescence, and rhythm. It is really a piece about two violinists listening to each other constantly, walking in lockstep while also enjoying their own sound, taking their time.

Listen to Ryan discuss his process working on the piece on Doug Bielmeier's podcast, The Process.
